‘UPS’

This is a
battery-powered,
power supply
(the acronym
stands for
Uninterruptible
Power Supply),
A backup power
unit, that
provides continuous
power to Telecommunications
systems when
the normal
power supply
is interrupted.

Why should
I consider
fitting a
unit like
this?

Mains supply
interruptions
are not the
only cause
for concern;
sags, surges,
spikes and
‘brownouts’
of the supply
are far more
common and
can stress
the power
supplies within
telephone
systems to
the point
where hardware
damage, data
errors and
costly downtime
result. UPS’s
can protect
against these
disturbances
in addition
to providing
battery back-up
in the event
of complete
power failure.

Routers are
all susceptible
to mains disturbances.

How much back-up
time will
such a system
provide?

The decision
is very much
up to you
– some
clients select
the minimum
amount of
protection
of just a
few minutes
backup to
protect them
from the smaller
outages, whilst
other organisations
have the provision
of several
hours backup
in order that
they can continue
to work and
use their
phone systems
in the event
of extended
power cuts.
